The skin around the eyes is the thinnest and most delicate on your body, which means it gets dry and irritated easily. Imagine that your eyes work a lot throughout the day, from blinking to expressing your emotions, so this alone can cause premature aging with visible signs around the eye, particularly without proper care. Moreover, genetic reasons, ultraviolet (UV) rays, external stressors, and lifestyle choices can also cause the skin around the eyes to age more quickly.

Young or not-so-young, worried about wrinkles or calm and carefree, it’s never too early or too late to give your eyes the love they deserve. The most common eye area issues are dark circles, fine lines, and puffiness (including eye bags).

Starting with the basics in eye skincare, moisturizing is the first step, often underrated, but it should not be skipped from your routine: loss of water from the eye area can lead to dryness, shrinkage and to the appearance of wrinkles. Soothe your thirsty skin with moisturizing ingredients like hyaluronic acid. Once the water is retained, the hydrated skin is plumper, so wrinkles are less visible. Your face moisturizer can be used for the skin around the eyes, as long as it doesn’t irritate them, and as it provides a sufficient amount of moisture. Keep in mind, however, that since the skin is thin around your eyes, it can be sensitive to regular face cream. If you feel a stinging sensation or your eyes turn watery or red, avoid using your regular face moisturizer, and instead invest in an eye cream. Eye creams are often formulated with ingredients less likely to have an adverse effect on your eyes while they contain enough active ingredients that may help reduce wrinkles and fine lines.

When you’re on the hunt for the right eye cream, it’s important to know which ingredients to look for, based on what you’re trying to treat.

You must look at the ingredient list and choose wisely. Below you’ll find ingredients based on particular skin concern:

To combat hyperpigmentation (dark circles), you’ll want to look out for products containing at least one of the following ingredients: arbutin, vitamin C, soy protein, niacinamide (vitamin B3).

For fine lines, the hydrating humectants will reduce the loss of moisture, but you might also want to look for ingredients that provide an immediate “plump up” effect. For this result, more potent ingredients that will help with stimulation of collagen production are needed. These include retinol, peptides, and Vitamin-A derivates.

When it comes to puffy eyes, products containing caffeine and green tea polyphenols can help reduce puffiness, along with simple remedies that can be as easy as getting enough sleep and drinking enough water!

For more general concerns about the skin around your eyes, look for antioxidants. These powerful ingredients help remove free radicals in the skin that are triggered by UV radiation, smoking, and pollutants. Moreover, they protect against cell damage and keep your eyes twinkling, so they may also help put a brake on the aging process.

In any case, when you apply your products try to be gentle:

-apply your product to your pinky finger

-dab your products around the eyes, circling your eye area. Don’t forget the upper eyelid

-repeat until the product is fully absorbed into the skin

Makeup Removal

Also, when removing your eye makeup, it’s important to be gentle, as the skin under your eyes is very thin and any extra pressure can contribute to extra fine lines. This way you’ll be gentler during makeup removal:

-apply your favorite eye makeup remover to a cotton pad.

-press the pad gently onto your skin.

-slowly drag it in an outward motion.

-repeat until your makeup is fully removed.

Sun Protection

Whichever your skincare routine, don’t forget that sunscreen is a must-do. You can use the same SPF you put on the rest of your face, or grab a product designed for the eye area. Sun exposure can play a big role in the skin aging process and can lead the skin under your eyes to become darker. A broad-spectrum sunscreen is truly an indispensable part of any skin care routine and should be applied every day. Even if it looks gloomy outside, UVA rays can still cause damage. Also, consider investing in a pair of sunglasses that offers UV protection. This can protect not only your eyes but also the skin around them from unwanted UVA and UVB rays.

Eye creams are available at every price point, ranging from affordable to, “Is this a tiny jar of lotion or liquid gold?”. Expensive doesn’t always mean more effective. Look for cream that has the right stuff for your eye goals — and the right price tag for your wallet. If you want to feel pampered, there are plenty of fancy eye products that look, feel and smell like a dream. But creams with a strong scent can irritate and dry out delicate eye skin. And just because something looks indulgent doesn’t mean it works.

Even the best eye creams can’t compete a good night’s sleep. Try to get at least six hours of sleep every night and regularly exercise to improve blood circulation. This can prevent the skin around the eyes to become darker, puffier, and look “unhealthy.” Apart from sleep and exercise, follow a healthy diet and hydrate! When it comes to changing your lifestyle habits to protect the skin around your eyes, consider also quit smoking. If you are a smoker, you’ve now got one more reason to: premature wrinkles. Smoking can speed up the normal aging process by impairing blood flow to your skin and damaging your levels of collagen and elastin, both of which contribute to your skin’s strength and elasticity.
